Surprisingly, Lisa didn’t revisit her interrogation, but Cindy pulled him into the conversation about the highs and lows of working in customer service. Lisa worked in real estate and knew how tiresome people could be. They spoke until the game started when they were promptly distracted. Lisa was predictably loud. She stood up, cheered, whistled and shouted her support. Cindy was quieter, but her kids gleefully joined in with Lisa, and toward the end of the match, Neil was standing up and cheering, too. He couldn’t help being swept up in the atmosphere, especially when Scott was up to bat.

Once, after a phenomenal home run, Scott had looked into the crowd, right at Neil, and gave a two-finger salute. Neil had clapped fiercely. When Scott’s team won, Neil’s cheeks hurt from the force of his grin. Scott, Paul and Leslie all came up to them after shaking the hands of the opposing team. Paul’s children ran toward him, and Lisa walked up to greet Leslie, but Neil waited with a smile. Scott’s outfit had grass and sweat stains. He’d pulled off his cap to reveal his sweat-slicked hair. He smelled and he was filthy, but Neil thought he was gorgeous. Neil cupped his lover’s neck when Scott was close enough and hauled him in for a kiss.

Scott cradled his face, softening their embrace as their lips brushed slowly and their tongues briefly touched before Scott shifted and their lips parted.

“Spent the entire game waiting for my victory kiss,” Scott murmured.

“You deserved it,” Neil said, stroking his thumb along Scott’s hairline. “You were great. Congratulations.”

“I had a lucky charm with me.”

“Oh?” Neil teased. “Four-leaf clover in your pocket?”

“More like a boyfriend on the sidelines.”

Neil huffed a laugh. He also kissed Scott again, feeling Scott sigh against him. It didn’t last anywhere near long enough as they were in public and surrounded by children. Their kisses still warmed Neil all the way through.

When they separated this time, Neil ran his gaze over Scott’s uniform. He fingered the collar as a few thoughts ran through his mind. It surprised Neil that they hadn’t occurred to him earlier.

“If I’m the lucky charm for the star baseball player, should I also be giving him a special reward for winning?”

Scott caught on and his eyes darkened.

“I would be willing to see what you had in mind,” he said, his voice a little rougher.

Neil’s smile turned devious.

I wonder if I could get him in his fireman uniform someday?

A baseball outfit could be a good way to test the waters.

“You boys coming to the celebration lunch?”

Paul’s inquiry had Scott send him a questioning look. Neil shrugged. It hadn’t been as bad as he’d feared. He could handle a little longer around Scott’s friends and sister.

“I’ve got nowhere else to be,” he said.

“Count us in,” Scott said, turning to Paul.

The man didn’t verbally respond. He was helping Cindy corral not only their kids but the others as well.

“I’ve got to shower,” Scott continued, drawing Neil’s attention. He stepped back.
